Raw Heat, installation loop, 2013

The recent turn to pure abstraction (late in my career) is curious, since I was always so committed to the communication potentials of the medium.  Nevertheless, the wave form shifting of colors and forms has always been a foundation of my work.  The cinematic, frame by frame animation potentials of digital processing reminds me of the reasons I was attracted to experimental film in the first place.  The current fascination among young video artists with analog synthesis and processing doesn’t surprise me: there is a strong human need for texture, density, and physicality.

Shalom Gorewitz is a trailblazer in the field of video art, a medium he has explored since its inception in the 1960s.  As one of the early practitioners of this evolving art form, Gorewitz has used video as a tool to merge personal introspection with sociopolitical commentary.  His work is characterized by a unique combination of experimental techniques, thematic depth, and a painterly approach to video that challenges conventional storytelling.
